CARING FOR KERATOSIS PILARIS

Keratosis Pilaris, known informally as KP, is experienced as small, rough bumps on the skin, most commonly on the arms and legs. Over 40% of adults experience KP, so you're not alone if you feel self-conscious about this common genetic skin condition.

Hands up for normalizing and showing off that cute, bumpy skin!

In the shops, we're often asked about natural treatments for KP using clean skincare and body products. Caring for KP is optional, as the condition itself is harmless; however, if you're experiencing dry and itchy bumps, we may have a solution to help ease discomfort.

This guide offers tips for managing KP at home, as recommended by dermatologists and Harvard Medical School. Put on your Ivy League sweater; relief is in sight.

1. EXFOLIATE GENTLY

Incorporating gentle, physical or chemical exfoliation can aid in removing the excess keratin that causes the bumps.

Gently scrubbing the skin with a Mitt or Sea Sponge can help loosen keratin plugs and smooth rough patches. However, it's essential to exfoliate gently to avoid irritation.

MARGIN UNSCENTED BODY WASH
Smooth without over-exfoliating. This wash is ideal for sensitive skin, the polyhydroxy acid (PHA) gently exfoliates, easily removing dead skin.

HEALTH HUT ORGANIC COTTON BATH MITT
This is the softest exfoliation mitt in the shop. It's recommended for sensitive and delicate skin, making it ideal for gently removing dead skin cells.

HEALTH HUT JUTE EXFOLIATING BATH MITT
The natural coarse texture of jute effectively scrubs and removes dead skin cells, leaving skin feeling soft, smooth and refreshed after every use.

HEALTH HUT SEA SPONGE
Sea sponges are extra soft, elastic, extremely durable, and long-lasting, and they offer an effective way to gently exfoliate KP.

Due to their natural enzymes, sea sponges do not grow mold or mildew or retain odours.

2. MOISTURIZE DAILY

Consistent use of a non-fragranced moisturizer is essential, as keeping skin hydrated can minimize the rough texture associated with KP. This is especially true in the winter when the colder air pulls moisture from the skin.

Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing on damp skin to lock in moisture.

LEAVES OF TREES UNSCENTED ARGAN HAND AND BODY LOTION
The high-quality argan oil in this lotion makes it an obvious choice for managing KP. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E support healthy cell functions and may ease the excessive build-up of keratin in the epidermis.

THE CURE UNSCENTED BODY WHIP
This solid-to-oil whip melts on application. Made with four ingredients, we're honing in on coconut oil and its natural abundance of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) in the lactic acid that helps to break up the keratin clogging hair follicles.

Note that while this product is not scented, it does smell like chocolate from the cocoa butter.
